Puerto Rico Heritage by Lpsalsaman Puerto Rico Heritage by Lpsalsaman
Well I was thinking about back home, Puerto Rico so I decided to do a little digital painting. Here is the flag and in the background is the "El Morro" castle. I also added the national instrument the "cuatro" which is a 12 cord small guitar and a conga drum. There are more things I could have added, but since I was trying my hand on just doing the digital painting straight up into the computer. This pic has 6 layers, so this is somewhat my first pic using that many layers. I hope you all enjoy it, I'm hoping to post some more soon. Thanks for looking! :)

I have another painting that I did over 20 years ago. On that pic, I have a "Plenera Hat" with the flag in the background. Then there is a Plenera drum, a Cencerro or cowbell, the clave sticks and a Guiro with the scraper. I probably will try to re-create it digitally and post it. Anyway thank you much and I'm glad you like the pic! Keep the tradition going!

PS: Hope you had a wonderful "PAVO" day! :)

This one was done on GIMP4. Actually I always do the sketch outside and then scan it, then use either program to fix or do detail work that I cannot do normally. I then make a decision as to go over the whole thing with the program or not. In the GIMP I normally just do things almost straight up, since the layering is a bit difficult. MangaStudio Layering is easier to use, plus you have all of the Material for special effects and so on that you can use. The GIMP is a better painting program. Anyway if you look around my gallery, you'll notice that I have some digitally painted and others are done in markers. I also do correction using the programs on the marker pics, but try to keep the integrity of the original. Mostly I add lettering or detail work on eyes and metal surfaces. It all depends! :)

ah ok. touch ups are always good. especially if you have access to digital programs.

i used to do the same thing, sketch in pencil then scan in the pictures for touch ups. but seeing so many digital artisits on :devart: several times a week just drove me to take up digital painting.

do you try to move between gimp & mangastudio to take advantage of the best parts of both, or too much hassle?
& i forgot to ask you, all your digital work is done with a mouse or a pen-tablet?

Well, if you check the "Sakura Blade" pic I use both GIMP and MS4. So in GIMP I did some corrections and gave some detail to the eyes and the skin color and the lettering. Then I use the MS4 to add the texture of the cloth and the flowers and petals. The border was sort of something I did using both. I added a border on MS4 and then again on GIMP to give it that thick frame. When you import from one to the other, MS4 seems to shrink a bit the pic. This is because it is a program to make comic pages! So it adds a page kind of framing.
When you export the pic back to GIMP, it has that extra area which is added and so it make the pic as if is inside of an all white frame.

Oh and yes, I do have a tablet. Sorry for the long explanation. I love the digital painting but I'm old school so I love to draw on paper and everything that it takes. :)

actually i thought the katakana was all done by hand !:o if you didn't mention it, i would've remained oblivious. i think i should read the art descriptions more before getting too carried away with the artwork. :XD:

yeh, i don't mind the paper and pencil feel. i did a lot of pencil and paper stuff during high school, copying comics :)

You know, I just realised that you had commented on the Puerto Rico pic which was done all digital paint. I went ahead and somewhat answer on the Sakura Blade pic thinking you were talking about that! No the Sakura Blade was all done old school, the only thing I did digital was the petal, flower effects and lettering. I also did the little bling on the katana but everything else is nothing but pencil, ink and markers. Sorry for the confusion! :)

Thanks LB! Wow, the last time I was back there was in 95 when my Mom passed. I haven't gone back since. I do talk to my brother, who retired from the Army and went back in 94. I guess one day I'll get back there again. :)

Appreciate the kind words LB. Yeah, I read the newspapers and talk to my brother at least every other week. The backhome of our childhood is no more, I do understand that progress is a reality but sometimes too much too fast does damage certain things. Don't get me wrong, it is really cool to go there and if you get a chance go visit! You will enjoy the beaches and the "views" ;)

I guess, since I lived there and left after highschool to join the service, my mind just remembers the PR that was there when I left. I'm a sucker for nostalgia, I guess! :D Well, I'm glad you like the pic LB! :)

Yeah, I will! I'm just experimenting at this time. I will try using the Manga Sutdio 4 that I just got. You know, that this pic I did straight on the computer, so sketch and colors. I think this is why I was able to do the layer thing easier. However, when I scan something I always seem to have some problems. I dunno!? Anyway, I will try to do the grimmy on the other program and see how it goes. Thanks bro! :)
